It so happened that I was in Vietnam as TASS correspondent when the country was fending off the U.S. agression. The deepest impressions are of my short stay in the southern provinces in June 1965.

The war was in its third month. Black smoke hovered on the horizon. It rose from burning houses, field, and jungle. Banana leaves pinned on netting camouflaged our jeep, for it was a rare minutes that no U.S. bombers roared overhead.

Bomb craters merred the frontline roads. At river crossings we waited for nightfall. At after-dark markets beside the jetties, in the light of frail oil-lamp, old women sold bananas and coconuts, litchis and huge crabs. Travellers like us examined the wares in the light of torches, bargaining in subdued, somewhat guilty, voices. From accros the river, a few miles away, came the noise of battle-bombs bursting, guns going off, and red glow coluring the dark sky. Under attack was the provincial capital of Vinh.

This is the story of the British people, as told by a distinguished Oxford historian and now published in this extended, illustrated edition. The original book first appeared in 1971 and was quickly accepted as the most authoritative account of the history of England from before Roman occupation up to the present day. Unusually, this new edition is actually bigger than the original; not only is it illustrated with more than 230 drawings and photographs in colour and black-and-white, but expert additions have been made to give a fuller account of the recent decades and of the history of Wales and Scotland. Useful tables of the more significant dates have also been added to every chapter.

This is a book that has several uses: it can be enjoyably browsed through or, thanks to its detailed index, it can be used as a very comprehensive work of reference. But its special merit is that the reader can pick out and study each of the many strands whose grand entwining constitutes the history of Britain.

This collection of primary source materials and essays by twenty authorities on different periods in American history in designed for use in the undergraduate American history survey course. The book provides a treatment in depth of specific problems in the development of American civilization from the colonial period to the immediate past. Some of its numerous advantages over other readings books for this course are described below.

1. The contributors are experts both on the historical problems they discuss and on presenting history in a manner that is challenging and relevant to the undergraduate.

2. The individual chapters deal with specific events, crises, or conflicts ("illustrative microcosms") that epitomize the character of the age, rather than with generalizations about trends and causes.

3, The topics treated reflect enduring and recurring issues in American history and are analogous to contemporary problems and controversies with wich the student is familiar. The past is allowed to speak in its own voice and in its own terms, yet the problems selected are almost uncomfortably germane to current American predicaments.

4. Each brief section (approximately 10,000 words each) joins an original essay with a collection of primary source materials. The essays provide the background needed for informed discussion of the source materials.

5. The book is unique in the variety and unconventionally of perspective and events which it presents.

For fifteen tense and troubled years, between the election of John F. Kennedy in1960 and the resignation of Richard Nixon in1974, the United States struggled to directs its domestic life and its role in a rapidly changing world.

At the end of the 1950s Americans felt a vague dissatisfaction. Only fifteen years earlier, victorious in a great and "good war", the United States bestrode the world, unchallenged, a colossus of political, military, and economic power. But by 1960 that dominance was eroding, as American leadership in science and technology faced a Soviet challenge in space and in atomic weaponery. A recovering Europe and a surging Japan posed complicated economic competition, and as the sixties rolled forward, the country was engulfed in a tide of criticism and dissent, much of it arising from a persistent racism and deepening comitment to a dubious conflict in Vietnam.

Kennedy's inauguration in 1961 fueled the country's soaring hopes for a New Frontier whose promises were reminiscent of older liberal expectation for an active federal government led by an activist president.

When Kennedy fell, Lyndon Johnson picked up the torch and spurred the country on to attack poverty and discrimination, as well as to pursue even more widely, the Vietnam War. It was an impossible agenda, doomed to frustation by domestic resistance and military stalemate. The result was an outburst of anger and violence in cities and on college campuses, and an eruption of radicalism during the late sixties.

Such tension and dissapointment could not last, but ultimately drove Lyndon Johnson from power and led to the election of Richard Nixon. His controversial presidency, with its shady undertakings and misuse of power, led in turn to further dissent and a near impeachment.

These fifteen years are as rich as any in American history, rich in incident --the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the civil rights struggle, the anti-war crusade, the opening of China, Watergate, Kennedy's death, Johnson's retirement, the fall of Nixon: rich of personality -- Robert Kennedy, Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King, Jr., Earl Warren, Bob Dylan, Henry Kissinger, the Beatles, Nikita Khruschev, George Wallace, Hurbert Humphrey.

Finally, this is a story of power--its attainment and use at home and abroad. If we conclude that the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon presidencies marked a decline in national power and a confusion of aim at home, we may also conclude that men and women during these years of discord strove to realize the best hopes and ideals that this country has to offer.

A Nation in Waiting lifts the veil on Indonesia, Southeast Asia's quiet giant. Written in an engaging and easy-to-read style, it captures the fascinating debate in Indonesia today on where the nation is heading. Spanning a wide variety of contemporary issues, it offers a detailed and thought-provoking glimpse of one of the world's largest and least understood nations. It chronicles the impressive economic development Indonesia has enjoyed under the 27-year leadership of President Soeharto as well as the difficult challenges which lie ahead.

Using a wealth of first-hand information, Adam Schwarz gives life to the heated debates on economic policy, corruption and the controversial role of ethnic-Chinese entrepreneurs. The book analyses the political demand of Indonesia's Muslim community, the mishandled incorporation of East Timor, the emerging debate on human rights, and the thorny problem of arranging a smooth transition of power. The underlying theme of the book is the widening gap between an increasingly modernised economy and a rigid political system that is struggling to keep up with the times. The task of matching political development with economic growth will be the central challenge for this enigmatic country in the 1990s. All those with an interest in Indonesia will find in this book invaluable insights into how politics and business are conducted in the world's fourth largest nation.

Adam Schwarz reported on Indonesia for the Far Eastern Economic Review from 1988 to 1992. Having enjoyed wide access to many of Indonesia's leaders and most prominent citizens, he now offers a rare behind-the-scenes view of Indonesia in which 'Indonesia voices' tell the story.

  • How did fears of the Cold War Shape Australian images of Asia?
  • What was the nature of Vietnamese revolution, which some 50.000 Australian troops failed to reverse in the 1960s?
  • How did a small and marginal peace movement grow into the powerful Moratorium and did it have any impact on the course of the War ?
Harvest of Fear is a beautifully crafted history of Australia's experience of the Vietnam War. It draws together a picture of social and political life in colonial and postcolonial Vietnam; an incisive look at Australian Cold War politics and the diplomacy that lead us to Vietnam; and a brilliant portrait of the origins and political impact of the powerful Australian anti-war movement. No previous book has pulled together these three critical strands of the Australian experience of the Vietnam War; it is indeed a broad and rich canvas.

Harvest of Fear presents the clearest picture yet of how the war came about, how it was seen from Australia, what the war in Phoc Tuy Province was like for the Australian soldiers sent there, and why our involvement was the cause of such division at home. Using a range of archival sources and interviews with participants, John Murphy shows how our intervention reflected the political alignments of Australia in the Cold War, as well as deeper and more troubled anxieties about Asia.

The Australian intervention in Vietnam remains Australia's longest and most contentious war. The war and its echoes are powerfully evoked in John Murphy's story.

Harvest of Fear is a book to appeal t0 everyone interested in Australian history and politics, and in Australia's Involvement with Asia, especially with the Vietnam War.

The KGB is the biggest spy machine for the gathering of secret information that the world has ever seen. Without its omnipresent supervision of every aspect of Russian life, the totalitarian Union of Soviet Socialist republics would cease to exist. It is the KGB militia which guards the 41, 595 miles of the country's sea and land frontiers; its the KGB which monitors the educations in Soviet schools, academies and universities and all the permitted arts. The KGB also controls all printed material through its 70,000 censors. It directs, frequently obscenly, the sciences and medicine. It controls the police and military. Through its informers and emplaced officials, it has power over the prisons and labour camps and in every city, town, village and hamlet, the KGB has established informant networks to learn of the behaviour and attitudes held by every one of the 268,000,000 inhabitants of the USSR.

In addition to the tyranny exercised by the KGB within the USSR, there are over 250,000 secret agents working overseas carrying out the aims of the KGB, 'to conduct active measures which will exacerbate the differences between individual countries, cause tension between neutral countries and developing countries on the one hand and western nations on the other hand'. To carry out this aims, the KGB spent no less than 1452,344,000 in 1980 alone.

Brian Freemantle is the creator of Charlie Muffin, the battered secret agent who features in a sequence of best selling thrillers. Like Charlie Muffin, Brian Freemantle has devoted many years, both as a journalist and as a writer, to studying the activities of deadly KGB. His research has enabled him to write a chilling authentic account of the work of Soviet secret police. He provides a detailed analysis of both the past and the present structure of the KGB, and with a wealth of horrifying stories and case histories, reveals the extraordinary lengths to which their agents will go. For the first time, the full extent of the KGB's blatant infiltration of United Nations is revealed and the terrifying thoroughness of their activities in fomenting revolution in Third-World countries. The author uses all the resources of a master storyteller to recount the horrifying story of a secret army whose everyday activities involve murder, torture and blackmail.

The book is illustrated with over sixty photographs illustrating scenes of life within the USSR under the tyranny of the KGB and also many of the people actively concerned with its workings.

Hodgson memiliki segalanya, kecuali The Venture of Islam edisi lengkap, yang nanti akan menjadi karya utamanya.

The future of science in the Western world looked dim as the sixth century A.D drew to a close. People seemed to have lost interest in searching for knowledge about the nature of the world around them, which is the main purpose of science.

It seemed questionable whether civilization itself could long endure. The great Greek and Egyptian cultures lay in ruins. Rome, the last bastion of learning in the West, had fallen to the barbarians from Nothern Europe in 476 A.D. Throughout the Western world the lamp of enlightment was flickering dangerously. It seemed possible that its glow might be snuffed out forever.

This situation would soon be changed by events occurring far from the ancient centers of power in Greece and Rome. About 570 A.D. (the exact date is unknown) a child named Mohammed was born in the town of Mecca in Arabia. No one could foresee that this boy, whose parents died by the time he was six years old, would become the leader of a movement that would conquer the ancient empires of Persia and Egypt and spread its domination all the way from India to the Atlantic Ocean.
